Where the Mountains Keep Watch

In Where the Mountains Keep Watch, artist Marilyn Wells reflects on our ancient bond with the living Earth. Mountains, water, air, land, and all living beings arise within one interconnected whole; we are not separate observers, but part of the same unfolding life.

The birth of my first child awakened in me an unexpected, deeply rooted instinct to nurture — something that felt less learned than revealed. That experience continues to shape how I understand our connection with the Earth.

In this painting, the mountains stand as silent witnesses: refuge, presence, and question. In our changing world, they ask how we will nurture the Earth that has always nurtured us.
